Colic
Infantile colic can be distressing to parents whose infant is inconsolable during crying episodes. The most accepted definition of colic is known as the rule of three: “Episodes of crying for more than three hours a day for more than three days a week for three weeks in an otherwise healthy child between the ages of two weeks and four months.” While this may be quite vague, there has never been complete agreement on colic, its causes, or its treatments. It is usually described simply as indigestion.
Crying associated with colic has been known to cause relationship stress, breastfeeding failure, postpartum depression, excessive doctor visits, and child abuse.
As your child is born, stretching and compressing of the body can occur during the delivery process. If delivery includes a vacuum or forceps extraction, a prolonged pushing stage, or other means of assisted delivery, the chances of structural misalignment and resulting pain can greatly increase.
If these misalignments are severe, the functioning of major body systems can be compromised. For instance, ineffective digestion of formula and breast milk can cause discomfort in your baby, leading to episodes of colic. Numerous studies show reductions in colic through chiropractic adjustments, most notably in the average hours per day spent crying. The use of drugs is not particularly effective, and at Divine Design Natural Health we can evaluate your child’s condition to recommend the best approach for bringing peace to you and your child’s precious health.
